Jonny Wilkinson considers that Warren Gatland should hold off the process of selecting his Irish and British Lions Test captain.

He believes that they hold of the selection process should be done until the week of the first Test, which is going to take place in Auckland on 24 June.

In the recent week, the captaincy has been the matter of speculation with Alun Wyn Jones, Owen Farrell and Sam Warburton, the front runners to be awarded the honor for the three-Test series which is going to take place against the team of New Zealand.

The name of the squad is expected to be declared on April 19, and after that Gatland will have to take a decision on the name of the captain.

However, Wilkinson has requested Gatland to appoint a leadership group and name a tour captain before. Then getting settled on the name of the test captain.

Wilkinson told the Sky Sports News that in-order to achieve victories in the game; each player on the tour had to function approximately to the level of captain.

He said,”In the perfect world, on the field you want your captain, but at the same time, I have got experience, I believe that no position in the team should ever be penciled in.”

Before the first game, you will not know your team and if you made your team without seeking their game, then it is like you are judging it basis of a different environment. You have to there to know and understand the game of each and every player in the squad.” He added.

He further added that “I believe there maybe three or four guys in the team that you know are eligible for the role of captain. Looking at their first game, it will become easier for you to make the decision.”
